A Pelvic Sonogram is an extremely effective imaging test to provide you and your doctor
with a clear picture of your reproductive health. Performed in approximately 30 minutes,
a Pelvic Sonogram is a complete evaluation of the female reproductive organs including
the uterus and ovaries. Pelvic Sonograms are commonly performed due to complaints of
pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding or to determine an early pregnancy and can determine if
you may have ovarian cysts, fibroid tumors, certain uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers
as well as ectopic pregnancies.
For your Pelvic Sonogram, you will be asked to have a full urinary bladder, so you will need
to drink plenty of liquids. Due to its position in the pelvis, a full urinary bladder aids in the
visualization of your pelvic organs. Images are taken using a hand held probe lubricated with
a warm gel applied over your abdomen. This procedure is called a Transabdominal Sonogram
and typically lasts 10-15 minutes. In conjunction with the Transabdominal Sonogram, an
Endovaginal Sonogram may also be performed. This allows the Sonographer to better visualize
ovarian and uterine structures with the greater detail. Prior to this study, you will be asked to
empty your bladder and a vaginal probe will be inserted into the vaginal canal. The
approximate length of this study is about 10-15 minutes. Your images will be recorded on film
and interpreted by a Radiologist, a doctor who specializes in ultrasound and a report promptly
sent to your doctor.
